May the gift of this tie bring to me the offer of a ring
Valentine's card of embossed and lace paper with applied decoration. The card is in the form of a envelope formed from pink and silver lace paper embossed with flower and vase decoration. The card is folded by four flaps which open to reveal inner applied decoration. This comprises a blue satin tie with a gold anchor metal foil tie pin and a paper scrap printed 'May the gift of this tie bring to me the offer of a ring'.
The introduction of the penny post in 1840 meant sending cards became easier and cheaper. A thriving business developed in central London producing cards and card components. This card was originally in the collection of Jonathan King, a stationer and newsagent who ran his own business making cards on Essex Road.
