Printed Ephemera — 1845-1880
Card, valentine card
Valentine's card with two layers of identical lace paper part painted silver. The central open panel is filled with a piece of cream watered silk. Applied to the centre is a small embossed and coloured paper illustration of two doves. Above is a love motto on a paper scrap printed 'An Offering of Regard'. Below is applied an arrangement of fabric and paper flowers.
The introduction of the penny post in 1840 meant sending cards became easier and cheaper. A thriving business developed in central London producing cards and card components. This card was originally in the collection of Jonathan King, a stationer and newsagent who ran his own business making cards on Essex Road.
