Printed Ephemera — 1845-1880
Card, valentine card
Valentine's card with white lace paper scalloped border. Applied to the central panel is a sepia coloured paper image of two lovers, framed by a gilded lace paper sheet embossed with figures, cupids and doves. The card is also decorated with coloured paper, metal foil tinsel branches and cotton net leaves and flowers.
The introduction of the penny post in 1840 meant sending cards became easier and cheaper. A thriving business developed in central London producing cards and card components. This card was originally in the collection of Jonathan King, a stationer and newsagent who ran his own business making cards on Essex Road.
