Printed Ephemera — 1845-1880
Card, valentine card
Valentine's card composed of two layers of lace paper embossed with vine decoration. The layers are joined by small pieces of folded paper. The under layer is white, the top layer pink. In the centre an open oval shaped cartouche is filled with a cream satin panel applied to which is a paper dove and a small paper flower arrangement. Applied to the top layer of lace paper is an arrangement of coloured fabric frosed leaves and coloured paper flowers.
Victorian Valentine's cards like this could be made from commercially-produced papers. Paper lace was a popular card base and printed scraps would be added to adorn and personalise the cards.
