Printed Ephemera — 1851-1880
Card, valentine card
Valentine's card formed from two layers of lace paper. The under layer comprises a plain central white paper cartouche with lace paper border embossed with flower decoration. The top layer comprises a pink and silver lace paper border with central open panel to which is applied an embossed paper illustration of a church part coloured silver. Also decorated with an oval border of white fabric and embossed leaves, a garland of coloured and embossed paper flowers & foliage & a small paper cut out 'scrap' of a cupid.
The introduction of the penny post in 1840 meant sending cards became easier and cheaper. A thriving business developed in central London producing cards and card components.
