Printed Ephemera — 1845-1870
Card, valentine card
Valentine's card the front cover comprising a pink and gilded lace paper border with an open centre filled with a fine netting. Applied on top of this netting is a cameo embossed image of a female and two cupids, part painted silver. The image is bordered by a silk fringe on which is also applied an arrangement of embossed and coloured paper flowers and foliage. A coloured paper 'scrap' below is printed 'No time can make me change my love, or e'er in inconstant to you prove'.
The introduction of the penny post in 1840 meant sending cards became easier and cheaper. A thriving business developed in central London producing cards and card components. This card was originally in the collection of Jonathan King, a stationer and newsagent who ran his own business making cards on Essex Road.
