Printed Ephemera — 1845-1880
Card, valentine card
Valentine's card of paper lace embossed with rose pattern, painted silver. The central panel comprises a pink satin under layer applied to which is a coloured illustration of a young lady before a large bluebell flower. The illustration is framed with a gilded metal foil frame. Also decorated with three pink fabric flowers on coloured paper and fabric foliage.
The introduction of the penny post in 1840 meant sending cards became easier and cheaper. A thriving business developed in central London producing cards and card components. This card was originally in the collection of Jonathan King, a stationer and newsagent who ran his own business making cards on Essex Road.
