Printed Ephemera — 1841-1880
I fondly truly love thee
Valentine's card with embossed and lace paper border attached to plain white paper. In the centre is applied an embossed and coloured 'scrap' with an image of a young boy standing at the prow of a sailing boat surrounded by flowers and foliage. Surrounding this image is a lace paper border embellished with four white fabric leaves and small 'scraps'. One of the scraps is printed with the words: 'I fondly truly love thee'.
Victorian Valentine's cards like this could be made from commercially-produced papers. Paper lace was a popular card base and printed scraps would be added to adorn and personalise the cards.
