Printed Ephemera — 1840-1870
I fondly truly love thee
Valentine's card with embossed and lace paper cover decorated with classical figures and buildings with registration stamp and maker's name 'Windsor'. Applied to the centre is a piece of starched white cotton decorated with an embossed and coloured garland 'scrap' printed with the words: 'I fondly truly love thee'. The cotton is surrounded by an embossed and coloured paper garland and an outer border of white embossed card part painted silver and decorated in the four corners with embossed coloured flower 'scraps'.
Victorian Valentine's cards like this could be made from commercially-produced papers. Paper lace was a popular card base and printed scraps would be added to adorn and personalise the cards.
