Printed Ephemera — 1841-1880
Youthful Love
Valentine's card with central, hand coloured illustration of a stream and rural scene. Printed with the words: 'Oh let every action prove the joyous truth of Youthful love'. The verse is partly concealed by two flaps of additional cut card illustrated with images of two young children attached to either side of the card. The card has a simple embossed border.
The introduction of the penny post in 1840 meant sending cards became easier and cheaper. A thriving business developed in central London producing cards and card components. This card was originally in the collection of Jonathan King, a stationer and newsagent who ran his own business making cards on Essex Road.
