Printed Ephemera — 1850-1890
Card, valentine card
Valentine's card with embossed and lace paper border decoration. In the centre a handcoloured flower and tree arrangement with two doves and a landscape in the centre. At the top of the card is written the verse: 'Oh, leave the world & become What others could not e'er have been Enjoy loves wreath of liberty And by, my life, my soul, my queen'.
Victorian Valentine's cards like this could be made from commercially-produced papers. Paper lace was a popular card base and printed scraps would be added to adorn and personalise the cards.
