You are my guiding star my Angel
Valentine's card with front cover of white satin with white and lace paper border. Parts of the paper lace border have been painted silver. Applied to the satin is a gold metal foil tinsel anchor and some decorative floral 'scraps', a 'scrap' bird and some metal tinsel foliage. A small scrolled scrap printed 'You are my guiding star my Angel' has also been added.
The introduction of the penny post in 1840 meant sending cards became easier and cheaper. A thriving business developed in central London producing cards and card components. This card was originally in the collection of Jonathan King, a stationer and newsagent who ran his own business making cards on Essex Road.
Victorian Valentine's cards like this could be made from
commercially-produced papers. Paper lace was a popular card base and printed scraps and metal tinsel foil could be added to adorn and personalise the cards.
