Card, valentine card

Valentine's card comprising a single sheet of card with decoration both sides. One one side is is applied a central 'scrap' of a coloured floral bouquet and on the reverse has been stuck a central coloured illustration of a young child in a party frock. These decorations are surrounded by a white lace-paper border which is in turn surrounded by a cotton lace outer border.

The introduction of the penny post in 1840 meant sending cards became easier and cheaper. A thriving business developed in central London producing cards and card components. This card was originally in the collection of Jonathan King, a stationer and newsagent who ran his own business making cards on Essex Road.
