Printed Ephemera — 1851-1900
Old Mother Gumm
Valentine's card with metallic blue satin cover. Inside a black and white illustration of a severe looking teacher in profile and opposite a printed verse 'Old Mother Gumm, she kept a school, And over little boys and girls she held perfect rule. But old Mother Gumm, to you was quite a Queen, For of all the silly teachers, a worse was never seen'. Although love was a dominant theme for Valenine's cards, insulting and comic cards were also common.
