Printed Ephemera — 1872-1905
In this recess my passion here let sway
Quarto sized Valentine's card with hand painted central aquatint of a woman leaning despairingly on her arm, a letter at her feet and a rural landscape in the background. Bordered with hand painted decoration and a verse reading: 'In this recess my passion here let sway, to disappointment my hear's a prey I cannot long these pangs endure. Despair alone will yeild a cure'. The card has an outer embossed floral border. Part of the 'Despondent Lover' or 'Unrequited Love' series of valentines cards originally published by Addenbrooke in the 1830's. This is a later reprint by King, whose address stamp is embossed on the card.
