Printed Ephemera — 1841-1860
A Kean Taste / A Keen Taste
Hand-coloured theatrical souvenir print engraved with an illustration of the actor Mr Kean embracing an actress on the sofa. The print is entitled 'A Kean Taste but the 'a' has been crossed through to be replaced by an 'e'. Signed 'I James fecit', referring possibly to the publisher, artist or both. Such portraits would have been sold plain as theatrical souvenirs for colouring and tinselling at home.
Although a popular and successful actor Kean was convicted for adultery and his private life drew criticism.
