Printed Ephemera — 1841-1860
Miss E. Tree as the Jewess
Uncoloured theatrical souvenir sheet engraved with a portrait of the actress Miss E.Tree in the role of 'the Jewess'. Such portraits would have been sold plain as theatrical souvenirs for colouring and tinselling at home.
Miss Tree was a popular and successful actress when she first met Charles Kean, who had made an uninspiring theatrical debut. The two fell in love whilst performing in Germany, but friends counselled against a sudden marriage and the couple went their separate ways, Tree took on a successful tour of America. They acted together nine years later and eventually married in 1842, when Miss Ellen Tree took the name of Mrs Charles Kean.
