Printed Ephemera — 1828-1833
Mr Ducrow as St George encountering the Dragon
Handcoloured theatrical souvenir portrait plate printed with an engraving of the actor Mr Ducrow in the role of St George encountering the Dragon. Such portraits would have been sold plain as theatrical souvenirs for colouring and tinselling at home.
Ducrow was known as 'The Great Ducrow' for his equestrian performance skills. He had worked with his father at South London's illegitimate theatres at the start of the century. Ducrow and his father worked at the Surrey Theatre together and the younger Ducrow went on to give many impressive performances.
