Printed Ephemera — 1833-02-26
Miss Fairbrother as Columbine
Uncoloured theatrical souvenir portrait plate printed with an engraving of the actress Miss Fairbrother in the role of Columbine. Originally published by JK Green February 26th 1833, this print may have been published at a later date. The agent's name Moss Hyams appears on the print as the retailer. Such portraits would have been sold as theatrical souvenirs for colouring and tinselling at home.
Fairbrother perofmed the role of Columbine in the pantomine of 1832. The print was collected by the London stationer, Jonathan King. King has annotated the print in pencil, noting that the actress was the 'wife of Duke of Cambridge' beneath the portrait. The marriage between Miss Fairbrother and the Duke was not deemed legal, so Fairbrother was denied use of a royal title.
