Printed Ephemera — 1850-1872
Mr Courtney as Thames Darrell
The portrait has been cut from a larger sheet and stuck on a piece of card, handpainted with appropriate background scenery. The portrait has been embellished by hand with metal foil tinsel ornaments, notably on the dress accessories and weapons. Cloth has been applied for the clothing. Decorating such portraits was a popular pasttime and pre-cut tinsel pieces would have been sold alongside printed portraits for colouring and tinselling at home. Marked 'Sold Wholesale and Retail by J.Redington at his Theatrical Print, Play & Tinsel Shop 208 Hoxton Old Town and Jonathan King 45 Chapel St., Somers Town'.
