Printed Ephemera — 1850-1872
Tinsel print
Handcoloured theatrical souvenir portrait plate printed with two engravings representing the actors Mr Phelps as Hamlet and Mrs Warner in the role of the Queen. The portraits have been cut out and pasted onto card handcoloured with appropriate background scenery. The portraits are embellished with metal foil tinsel ornaments notably on the clothing, dress accessories, armour and weapons. Silk and cotton cloth has also been applied for the clothing. Such plates would have been sold plain as theatrical souvenirs for colouring and tinselling at home.
