Printed Ephemera — 1850-1872
Mademoiselle Theodore as Columbine
Theatrical portrait printed with an engraving of an actress in the role of Columbine. The name Mademoiselle Theodore has been struck out. The portrait has been stuck onto a handpainted backing card. The figure is embellished with metal foil tinsel ornaments on the clothing and jewellery. Cotton and silk fabric has been applied for the clothing and paper flower 'scraps' have been applied for the garland. Publishers sold souvenir penny prints which featured actors in character, often in dramatic poses. These proved successful and by the 1830s decorating these theatrical souvenir prints with tinsel had became a popular past-time. This print was coloured and sold wholesale and retail by J.Redington (Hoxton) at his Theatrical Print, Play and Tinsel Shop and by J.King (Somers Town).
