Printed Ephemera — 1850-1872
Mrs West as Elvira
Theatrical portrait printed with an engraving of the actress Mrs West in the role of Elvira. The portrait has been cut out and stuck on card handcoloured with appropriate background scenery. The portrait is embellished with metal foil tinsel ornaments on the clothing and the jewellery Cotton and silk fabric has been applied for the clothing. Such portraits would have been sold plain as theatrical souvenirs for colouring and tinselling at home. Marked as 'coloured and sold wholesale and retail by J.Redington (Hoxton) at his Theatrical Print, Play and Tinsel Shop and by J.King (Somers Town)'. Closer inspection of the area around the actress's right foot suggests that her skirts may hide the name of an actress and role which may be different from that added by hand.
