Printed Ephemera — 1850-1872
Mons. Louis as Clown
Handcoloured theatrical souvenir sheet engraved with a portrait of the actor Mons. Louis in the role of the Clown. The portrait has been cut out and stuck onto a piece of cardboard handcoloured with some background scenery. The actor's name was printed on the background as T.Matthews, but has been annotated in pencil. The corrected version reads 'Mr Louie as Clown at the Britannia.' Such portraits would have been sold plain as theatrical souvenirs for colouring and tinselling at home.
