Printed Ephemera — 1850-1872
Miss M. Woolf as Joe Jessamy
Handcoloured theatrical souvenir portrait of the actress M. Woolf in the role of Joe Jessamy. The portrait has been cut out of a paper sheet and stuck onto a piece of card with handcoloured background scenery. The portrait is embellished with metal foil tinsel ornamentation notably on the dress accessories, swords and gloves. Silk and cotton cloth has been applied to the areas of clothing. It is marked 'coloured and sold wholesale and retail by Redington (Hoxton Old Town) and by J.King (Chapel Street).' Such portraits would have been sold plain as theatrical souvenirs for colouring and tinselling at home.
