Printed Ephemera — 1835-1837
St Patrick of Ireland
Handcoloured portrait print of St Patrick of Ireland on horseback. Printed as part of Skelt's 'horses' series the portrait has been cut out and stuck on cardboard with some handcoloured background scenery. The portrait is embellished with metal foil tinsel ornaments notably on the armour, weapons, horse livery and dress accessories. The horse and parts of St Patrick's clothing are covered with silk cloth. Such sheets of mythological and allegorical characters would have been sold plain for colouring and tinselling at home.
