Printed Ephemera — 1834
Mr Osbaldiston as Jonathan Bradford
Handcoloured theatrical souvenir plate engraved with a portrait of the actor Mr Osbaldiston in the role of Jonathan Bradford. The plate has some handcoloured background scenery entitled 'Mr Hayes accusing Bradford' and 'Bradford compelling Macraisy to sign'. Such sheets would have been sold plain as theatrical souvenirs for colouring and tinselling at home.
Osbaldiston built up a profile as an actor and theatre manager. He enjoyed a successful career, but was much criticised for his well-known affair with the actress Miss Eliza Vincent. Osbaldiston's wife's friends wrote to newspapers, and farces and penny publications alluded to the affair. Osbaldiston was manager of the Royal Victoria theatre at the time of his death in 1850. His successor in the role was Miss Eliza Vincent.
