Mr Gomersall as Earl Douglas
Theatrical souvenir portrait plate with engraving of the actor Mr Gomersall in the role of Earl Douglas from the play Chevy Chase. Published 4 June 1832, the portrait is embellished with metal foil tinsel ornaments notably on the armour, weapons and dress accessories. The clothing is of silk. The portrait has been cut out and pasted onto card with some handcoloured background scenery. Such sheets would have been sold plain for colouring and tinselling at home. The plate is also marked 'scenes and characters in Chevy Chase are now publishing as above in the same superior style as Aladdin'.
