Decorative arts — C.1750; 18th century
Standing cup and cover
This glass goblet and cover is engraved with a view of the Royal Exchange. The building was London's main meeting place for merchants, bankers, shipowners, factors and brokers. Rebuilt after the Great Fire, it reopened in 1669. The Royal Exchange had an open courtyard surrounded on four sides by a covered arcade.
The goblet and cover are made of soda glass and were manufactured in Silesia. The engraved scene that covers the bowl of the goblet is probably based on an early 18th century engraved print. The cover and stem are cut with a further engraved and cut decoration on the foot of the goblet. The top of the goblet and the bottom edge of the lid are gilt. Such an item may have been an expensive souvenir sold at one of the shops on the upper floors of the Exchange.
