The Duke of York Triumphant
Broadside ballad of eight verses entitled 'The Duke of York Triumphant' illustrated with a woodcut engraving depicting the Duke on horseback riding through the battlefield. The ballad refers to the Duke's command of the British troops during the Flanders Campaign of the 1790s and was one of several similar ballads printed by John Marshall to commemorate British battles during the Napoleonic wars against France.
Such commemorative, illustrated broadsides recounting tales of heroism and victory were extremely popular with Londoners during the Napoleonic Wars as many young men left the UK to fight overseas. Mass printed often by small publishers based in areas such as Seven Dials they were usually sold by street hawkers and travelling pedlars. Illustrated broadsides such as this were often framed and hung on walls to decorate homes and taverns.
