Decorative arts — C. 1755
Wallpaper
Chinese wallpaper was first imported into Britain by East India Company merchants in the late seventeenth century. Much of the wallpaper was made in the port city of Canton (Guangzhou). Along with imported tea and porcelain, Chinese wallpaper became the height of fashion in the drawing rooms of wealthy Londoners' homes.
English manufacturers began to produce imitations to compete with Chinese imports. This wallpaper was designed by an English artist who has created a stylised Chinese landscape featuring a woman playing a musical instrument.
