Johnson, the First Rider on the Pedestrian Hobbyhorse
Denis Johnson, a coach builder, called his 1818 vehicle, copied from the Draissienne just produced in Paris by the Baron von Drais, a pedestrian curricle or velocipede, but the public preferred hobbyhorse, after the children's toy or, worse still, dandyhorse, after the foppish men who often rode them. This may be a later reprint of the Ackermann print of 1819: it has a long descriptive caption, but in such simple terms as to require that it is very early.
