Printed Ephemera — 1887
Programme, dance programme
A programme of dances produced for the reception and ball help at the Guildhall on June 28 1887 in celebration of the Queen's Jubillee.
The programme's front and back cover is lithographed with lavish gilded and coloured decoration incorporating a top roundel with a profile portrait of the Queen and a bottom roundel with the City shield, attached to the side is a pencil and silk tassle. Inside is printed a list of twenty dances and an adjacent programme of engagements with space for adding names which has not been filled in. A pencil is attached to the programme by a silk tassle.
After the death of her husband Prince Albert in 1861 the Queen cancelled her Silver Jubillee in 1862 and made few public appearances thereafter. Her Golden Jubillee was therefore imbued with particular significance and this ball was one of a number of celebrations that took place over the course of the 20th and 21st June, others included a ceremony at Westminster Cathedral at which a number of Indian princesses were present.
