Printed Ephemera — 1852
Grand Moving Panorama of the Arctic Regions
Printed handbill announcing the display of a Grand Moving Panorama of the Arctic Regions at the Linwood Gallery, Leicester Square.
The panorama referred to the continuing search for the explorer Sir John Franklin whose ship was lost during an Arctic expedition in the late 1840s. Despite many searches no trace of his expedition was found until 30 years later.
The Linwood Gallery was established by the famed embroiderer and needlewoman Mary Linwood in 1809. She had a permanent exhibition of her work on display in a long gallery on the first floor of the building on Leicester Square, which also housed William Green's Pistol Repository and Shooting Gallery from 1836-1855.
