Printed Ephemera — 1766
The London Almanack
This London Almanack was printed for the Stationers' Company which had a monopoly on the publication and wholesale of almanacs in the eighteenth century. Almanacs were usually either pocket sized or broadsheets that could be attached to the wall. They were calendars which typically contained pictures as well as astrological and other factual information.
This miniature almanac includes an engraving of the Bank of England and lists the Lord Mayors of London between 1742 and 1767. Sir Robert Kite was Mayor at the time of publication. It also features a list of monarchs from William I to the reigning George III. The calendar records astrological information, such as each month's 'change of the moon'. Saints' days and other religious events, such as Shrove Tuesday and Whitsun, are also listed. At the end there is a table of Portuguese coins.
