Printed Ephemera — 1835-1860
Napoleon Buonaparte crossing the bridge of Loda
Handcoloured portrait print engraved with a portrait of Napoleon Buonaparte on horseback crossing the Bridge of Loda. The portrait is embellished with metal foil tinsel ornamentation on the horse blanket and the clothing is of silk. The portrait has been cut from a paper sheet and stuck onto card handcoloured with background scenery. Such portraits would have been sold plain for colouring and tinselling at home. Historical portraits like this were produced following the success of theatrical portraits produced for the past-time of tinselling.
