Printed Ephemera — 1850-1876
Mr Carter as the Lion King
Handcoloured theatrical souvenir portrait print engraved with a portrait of the actor Mr Carter in the role of Richard I. The portrait is embellished with metal foil tinsel ornamentation on the dress accessories and weapons and the clothing is of silk. The portrait has been cut from a paper sheet and stuck onto card handcoloured with background scenery. Prints were issued and sold with batches of tinsel shapes to attach. Many characters were depicted in dramatic combat poses. Standard poses were repeated to use cut tinsel stock. Such portraits would have been sold plain as theatrical souvenirs for colouring and tinselling at home. Coloured and sold by J.Redington and J.King.
