Printed Ephemera — 1851-1875
Mr Palmer as Richard Coeur de Leon
Handcoloured theatrical souvenir portrait print engraved with a portrait of the actor Mr Palmer in the role of Richard the Lion Heart on horseback. The portrait is embellished with metal foil tinsel ornaments notably on the armour, horse livery and weapons. Many male actors were depicted in suits of armour as these offered scope for tinsel decoration. This portrait has been cut from a paper sheet and mounted on card hand coloured with background scenery. Prints were issued and sold with batches of tinsel shapes to attach and coloured backgrounds could also be purchased to mount characters on. Such portraits would have been sold plain for tinselling at home. Coloured and published by J.Redington.
