Working History — C. 1910-1950
Token, market token
Fish wholesalers at Billingsgate market paid porters for their work with tokens marked with a specific cash value. At the end of the day, porters would cash in the tokens to receive their daily wage. Such practice was common throughout London's wholesale markets where porters were employed as casual labourers rather than salaried staff. This token, used by the fish wholesaler Edwin Plowman, was worth 1 shilling.
