Songbook

Songbook printed with selections and words of madrigals, glees, choruses and songs sung nightly at Evans's Supper Rooms in Covent Garden. The first 16 pages of the 30 page book are printed with general information about the history of Covent Garden including its theatres and market. Also included are a number of advertisements for a range of products, most of which refer to health remedies and medicines.

Evans music and supper rooms were opened by W.H. Evans in the 1840s. Located at 43 King Street, Covent Garden they occupied the dining room of a large 17th century mansion that had been turned into a hotel in the late 18th century. By the 1850s the venue was owned by 'Paddy' Green who rebuilt the supper room. Described as 'one of the most elegant rooms in London', it had large chandeliers and hidden lights in the architraves to light the ceiling. Its decorative style was praised as 'sufficiently classic, without that sombre look'. The establishment finally closed in 1880.
