Printed Ephemera — 1829
The Learned Cats!!!
This printed handbill or flyer advertises performances by Signor Cappelli's famous 'Learned Cats' that took place daily at 248 Regent Street. According to the handbill the performance included the cats, who were dressed up as a mother, two sons, a daughter and a 'jet-black and maternal-looking negress', entertaining the audience by ringing bells, sharpening knives, hammering an anvil, roasting coffee and playing an organ while the cleverest cat of all drew water from a well. Signor Cappelli arrived in London from Tuscany with his performing cats shortly before the flyer was printed.
