Printed Ephemera — C. 1910
Letter paper
This headed notepaper is from H & F Van Vlymen, meat salesmen in Smithfield market in the City of London. In 1889 at the age of 15, Henry Van Vlymen emigrated from Holland to London to work at Smithfield market. Frederick Van Vlymen joined his brother in 1901, the same year the brothers began trading from 62 Central Meat Market.
The brothers had an exclusive supply of meat sent from their family farm in Holland, which they transported in wooden boxes topped with ice blocks. In 1919 their nephew Herman joined the business and went on to become manager. At the outbreak of World War II, the government closed Smithfield market and established 'distribution depots' for the sale of meat. When the market reopened in 1954, Henry was 80 years old and he decided to sell his business.
