Copper, copper alloy, tag
Piece of copper alloy sheet, possibly from a looped tag, found with a hoard of 22 small coins. The coins were issued by the kings of Northumbria. The hoard was buried in Lundenwic at about the time of the Viking raid in 851. Perhaps they belonged to a traveller from Northumbria who was caught up in the attack. If the hoard was inside a purse, this tag may have been one of a pair that controlled the purse's drawstring. This fragment is decorated with an irregular punched design of tiny triangles.
