Prisoners stopping at the Baptists's Head in St John's Lane, on the day of removal from the New-Prison [in Clerkenwell] to Newgate. In the accession file for the engraving is a photocopy of page 335 from WJ Pinks's History of Clerkenwell (1881) records the habit of gangs of prisoners halting there for refreshment and mentions that the scene was engraved for the Malefactors' Register (The Annals of Newgate; or, Malefactors Register (4 vols), London, 1776) - probably this engraving. The prisoners stand outside the alehouse apparently being served through the window. They do not appear to be in any way bound or confined - indeed, there is little to indicate their status.

Attributed to Daniel Dodd (?) in the British Museum catalogue. Richard Dodd is another possibility, however, as he drew similar subjects.
