Measure, baluster measure
A baluster measure of half-pint capacity with a carinated rim. The ‘hooded ball’ terminal is disproportionately large for a handle of this size and the pewterer has evidently cast this feature from a pint or quart sized handle mould. Handles were often miss-cast and so small details like the ‘hood’ in this example are often either missing, or have been deliberately filed to create a smooth ball. Is the hooded ball terminal a repair/replacement? Or did the pewterer fashion the handle from two incomplete casts? Date: 18th century
