Printed Ephemera — 1704
The Ordinary of Newgate his Account of the Behaviour, Confessions, and Last Speeches of the Criminals that were Executed at Tyburn, on Wednesday the 21st of June, 1704
Broadside printed with a report of 'The Ordinary of Newgate his Account of the Behaviour, Confessions, and Last Speeches of the Criminals that were Executed at Tyburn, on Wednesday the 21st of June, 1704' . The broadsheet reports what the Ordinary of Newgate, Paul Lorrain said to the condemned prisoners and also includes their dying confessions. Printed in two columns the report has no illustration.
Dying confessions and last speeches were particularly popular with Londoners keen to keep up with the latest news of public executions. Along with execution broadsides they would be sold by street hawkers moving amongst the crowds of spectators who had come to witness the executions outside the gates of Newgate. Printed cheaply and quickly by broadside publishers in the days before the executions they often included spelling mistakes and poor grammar and often inaccurate facts.
