Social History — 1931-1939
Lift panel
This panel was part of the interior decoration of a lift installed in Marshall and Snelgrove department store in the 1930s. It is decorated with a lacquered and painted Chinese style relief pattern. The panel was removed in 1974 when the lifts were replaced and escalators installed. Marshall and Snelgrove opened on Oxford Street 1837. By the 1930s department stores lined Oxford Street, all competing for shoppers' leisure time and money. Exotic interiors, comfortable restaurants and rest-rooms helped keep customers inside as long as possible.
