King's Cross Gasholders, Afternoon
Giant gas holders behind King's Cross station are seen from the east bank of the Regent's Canal which appears in the foreground. The gothic towers of St Pancras station can be seen in the distance, along with several high-rise office blocks. The barrel vault over the train tracks of the station can also be seen. Painted in dramatic tones of blue and brown, the gasholders seem massive and imposing, silhouetted against a forbidding winter sky.
The work was painted as a part of series inspired and part-commissioned by the artist's friend Michael Samuelson, the film maker. Mark Cazalet (born 1964 ) states that he is not simply interested in the Victorian design and technology of gasometers: he is also interested in the way they can be used as a metaphor for the human body, as a container for an invisible spirit.
