Cautopates
Relief sculpture of Cautopates, a torch bearer for the god Mithas. The figure holds a lighted torch pointed downwards, a symbol of darkness and death. Originally it would have stood within the Temple of Mithras, with its companion figure, Cautes, who holds an upright torch symbolising light and life. Found on the site of the Roman Temple of Mithras.
