Decorative arts — 1830-1850
Flask, spirit flask
This flask was made to contain alcohol. The man on the side represents a character called Jim Crow. In 1928 the White American comedian Thomas D. Rice began to perform a minstrel routine based on an enslaved Black man whom he named Jim Crow. The name became a derogatory term for Black people. Minstrel performances were also exported to Britain as popular entertainment. An inscription on the other side of the flask reads: JACKSON / Bush Tavern / St Martins Le Grand.
